VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The whale that was stranded in a fishing net off Sandbridge beach on Friday freed itself from the net this weekend.
On Sunday morning, Virginia Marine Police along with the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team and several disentanglement experts went to Sandbridge Sunday morning where the whale was entangled and discovered that it was gone, Joan M. Barns, a spokesperson for the Virginia Aquarium said.
The team believes the whale freed itself from the gear.
The National Oceanic Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) Fisheries specialists will continue to investigate the incident by reviewing images, the fishing gear, and Aquarium staff statements.
Barns said the whale was not matched to any identified whale in the Gulf of Maine Humpback ID Catalog, but with the images that were taken Friday, future identification of the young mammal will be possible.
